It’s easy to forget that WinZip isn’t the only file compression utility in the world for Windows. There’re a lot of free file compression tools like 7-Zip.

7-Zip is a compression utility that lets you create, update, extract archive files including ZIP, TAR, GZ, and its own 7z format. It’s simple, no-nonsense interface is integrated in the shell and can be accessed via the right-button menu. 7-Zip borrows much of its interface from the shell itself - an opened archive file looks as if it were a plain Explorer window. The only difference is the ‘Extract’ button. Owing mainly to that, the tool is incredibly fast even with huge archives with lots of sub folders and hundreds of files. The program also compresses files into smaller archives, some 40 or 50% smaller comparing to WinZip.

The main features of 7-Zip

  • High compression ratio in new 7z format with LZMA compression
  • Supported formats:
    • Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
    • Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS
  • For ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip provides a compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than the ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip
  • Self-extracting capability for 7z format
  • Integration with Windows Shell
  • Powerful File Manager
  • Powerful command line version
  • Plugin for FAR Manager
  • Localizations for 63 languages

So, go ahead and try it out!!
