BioTecKSome time ago I wrote a post titled “Recycle as much as you want“. Nicole from Nicoleb.org though that the post was about environment and recycling, which obviously wasn’t. But her comment got me thinking to write an article about the environment and recycling.
These days more and more packages are made of stuff which we can recycle. For example when you’re walking in the supermarket and you grab something you’ll see the recycle logo which you can view here below.
But what exactly is recycling? The Encarta Encyclopedia defined recycling as:
- Processing of waste for re-use: the processing of used or waste material so that it can be used again, instead of being wasted.
- Saving for reprocessing: the saving or collection of used or waste material for reprocessing.
Practically everything can be recycled these days, which is good, but unfortunately there are some products which we can’t recycle such as plastics.
I don’t how things work in other countries, but in Holland we have to separate our garbage. How!? I can explain it.
- We have to separate paper, newspapers, paper packages and cartons. Once in 2 weeks those will be collected by a company which is hired by the local authority.
As we all know we can recycle paper and cause people have separated it, it’s cheaper to recycle it! - We also have to separate GFT waste. (gft stands for: groente-, fruit- en tuinafval which means: Vegetable, fruit and garden waste). Among vegetable, fruit and garden waste there are a lot of other stuff which can be categorized as gft such as: potato peels, fish bones, diner left overs, weeds and much more! From 1994 every city/village in Holland have to separate gft waste. Why? Cause this can be used to produce compost. As a result the damage to the environment is much smaller cause you don’t have to burn this kind of waste, cause they’re organic waste. Once in 2 weeks those will be collected by a company which is hired by the local authority.
- All other kind of garbage. Everything which doesn’t belong to the categories here above!
This categorie is meant for products which doesn’t belong to one of the categories here above, like plastic and other stuff. Like the categories here above, those will be collected by a company which is hired by the local authority.
You see… That’s not much work! It’s very easy to do and it doesn’t cost a lot of time! By doing this you’re doing a good job and you’re contributing to the environment and recycling.
Maybe it’s a good idea to take a test! Which test? Well, while I was checking Wilson’s blog I saw this Green IQ test. I found this interesting and took this test, which is a really small test with only 15 question. This test is about whether you’re doing a good job when it comes to saving the planet! Here below you can see the final results of my test!

Can one person make a big difference? Absolutely, and you’re doing it! From separating your recyclables to carpooling, you’re well on your way to having the green lifestyle all wrapped up (in recycled paper?). But there is room for improvement, you know. Good thing you have the drive and the initiative to keep seeking out more ways to make a difference! You’re probably going to be the one to start a clean air initiative in your neighborhood or to install that new low-flow toilet. Can’t you see it?
Of course you’ve still got a few big lifestyle changes to make before you can declare yourself perfectly green, but that’s okay. Who doesn’t love a little challenge? Keep making your life eco-friendly — the planet needs you!

I hope so!! This days more and more people are thinking about recycling and helping the environment! Which is a good thing! But we still have to work together to accomplish things!
In Kuwait things are still not much about recycling.
They hand you a bazillion of plastic bags in the supermarket, etc.
The only ones recycling something are Bangladeshi trash collectors that go for cans and paper cartons.
One guy got stabbed the other day when two of them were fighting over those paper boxes…..
I like the way it works in Germany (and now most European countries.
And it feels weird to come here and dump everything in one big bag and see trash outside everywhere.
It will take another 10 years at least for these people here to maybe wake up. I’m afraid that will be too late though….

That’s real odd!!
In Europe (I don’t know about other countries) it’s well organized and people are aware of recycling! Maybe the life in countries like Kuwait is so hard to people don’t care about recycling!

They get money for certain amounts of cans and boxes.
This is - for them - not about recycling.
It’s about money.
Kuwait itself is a rich country. It’s people become quite a bit of money for free from the government just for being Kuwaiti. But with most peoples Lifestyles it’s just never enough.
Many times they don’t even pay their employers but they are stuck with them, because it’s not that easy to change a Sponsor when you have no money.
I see!!
I think that every government should encourage people to recycle and not paying them just for being Kuwaitis!

Life Style of the Kuwaitis or the Asians?
Yes, I’m really curioused!
Well, most Asians work for a low rate, imho live in shacks.
Low rate in this case means, less than 500 Dollars a months - that’s a quarter of what we pay for rent.
Kuwaitis usually make it look like they have a lot of money, but most don’t. They live on loans which most don’t pay back.
They love to live in big houses, even if most rooms are unfurnished, love to show off with a driver, maid and whatnot, even if they don’t pay the salary.
It’s a weird place.
I see…When I was in Iran in 2006 I saw the exact thing!
People work for a low rate, something about 600 dolloars (or less)
But most of the people live in big houses, In some case they even have a
second house somewhere else, everyone in the family got there own car etc!
But life back there is just too hard, people have to work arround the
clock to get some money and I think that’s one the main reasons that people don’t care about recycling! I think that this will changes when the people earn enough money and can fulfil there needs!
