Bad sectors?? Jep, a bad sector is a sector on the hard disk that can’t be used due to permanent damage, such as physical damage to the disk particles. It is usually detected by a disk utility software such as CHKDSK or SCANDISK. When found, these programs mark the sectors unusable and the operating system skips them in the future.

So if your hard disk start to act freaky make sure that you have an up-to-date backup (If you’re looking for a free and great backup tool I recommend Cobain Backup!) and then you can do some simple diagnostics and repairs. Windows comes with a built-in hard disk utility software that scans your hard disk for errors and attempts to fix them.

  1. Double-click on My Computer
  2. Select the disk/partition that you want to diagnose and repair.
  3. Right click on the disk/partition you selected and click on Properties
  4. Choose the Tools tab.
  5. Click the Check Now button under Error Checking Status
  6. Depending on your type of Windows, choose Thorough or Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors
  7. Click Start

Good advice BioTeck.

But if this doesn’t fix anything then you might consider to format the hard drive.

Also hard drives with many errors might recover (not the data) with a low level format which is very useful.

Really? It has done the job for me in the past for a couple of times..That’s why I wanted to share this tip.

2 Nik:
It’s something which you can try before formating the hard drive. In the past this has helped me out a couple of times but you’re right.. If this doesn’t help formating the hard drive is the only option. :)

To be honest I’ve never used low level format, only the “normal” format…
