The Importance Of Having Backups!

Posted By: BioTecK on Sunday 14 September 2008 with 13 Comments

Making backups of your documents, photo’s etc is really important, but how often do you create a backup? Every week, month or year?? Or just whenever you start thinking about it? Well, I try to make backup as often as possible but I didn’t make one in the last month so yesterday something “bad” happened.

I don’t know how it happened but somehow all my images which had a total size of 7GB and all my video’s (No dvd’s, but video’s taken with my phone, Jannie’s phone, our camera etc..) with a total size of a couple of GB’s were all GONE! Don’t ask me how it happened, cause I really don’t know!
I think that I have might deleted them by accident, but usually I’m too careful with things like this.

The same thing happened to me some years ago, but it wasn’t as bad as this time. Back then all of my MP3 collection were gone but I was able to download them again or get them from friends. When looking back it was my fault, I had formated the drive with all the MP3’s on it! :???:

But now… I can’t download the photo’s or get them from friends… All I have is a backup of my images from 6 months ago, the pictures in my gallery (which have been resized!) and no backup of my video’s! This is really a shitty situation and I’m really pissed about this!

Like I said I have a 6 months old backup, so I still have those. Right now I’m trying to get the pictures and video’s back with a recovery software. Let’s hope that I can get the pictures which have been taken in the last 6 months! Pictures like our holiday to El Gouna, Metallica concert on Pinkpop and some more stuff!

Let this be a lesson for you too: If you don’t want to loose your important stuff, try to create backups as often as possible. For example once in a month or so!

So, Don’t forget to create a backup!

Being an independent software developer I have to make back ups or risk losing a lot of money. I store things like my documents, mp3, pictures and videos, on a RAID 5 server I built specifically for that.
Before I had a file server I always made sure to have at least 2 hard drives in my computer so I could have my applications and windows on one drive and the rest on the second drive. This is by no means a 100% good solution but it does work.

Yep, making a backup is very important Lyndi. Just don’t forget to make it once in a month! ;)

Your right Ben. At this moment I’m thinking to buy a home server (NAS system). I have read a review of 7 different NAS system is a magazine and that’s what I need! :D

Yep it is a bummer Varun. I have recoverd all my images and I already have made some backups of it. usually I’m backuping my stuff on dvd’s but I’m going to get a home server.

I make backups of my blog (dir, images etc) when Wordpress gets updated and a weekly database backup Dunn. So from now I’ll have to make backups of my documents as much as I backup my blog stuff! ;)

You’re right Trechns. I should bakup monthly. So I’ve installed Cobain Backup and made a task so I never forget to make a backup again. ;)

If you need a reminder or a software which does it for you, try Cobain Backup Shaxx. This works also on Vista! ;)
