Time is money so they say and you can win some time when using the run command in Windows. You can use it to run a program or to open a document directly. In Windows XP you could do that by going to Start - Run and type the programs shortcut to open it directly.

As you know in Windows Vista things are a bit different then what it used to be in Windows XP. One of those things which I really mis is the Run box being displayed in the Start menu.

Ok, I know that you can use the search box which takes over many of the function of the Run box. You just type the the name of a command or shortcut in the search box and it appears instantly in order to be opened by hitting Enter or clicking the item, but what if you want to have the Run option displayed in the start menu in Windows Vista?

Well, that’s easy! Just follow the steps in order to add the Run box to the start menu in Vista:

  1. Right click on the Start button
  2. Choose Properties
  3. Go to the Start Menu tab
  4. In the tab, Click the Customize button. Which you can find at the right of the tab.
  5. Now scroll down and place a check mark next to the Run option, as shows as below.
  6. This is Optional: But if you prefer, you can customize some other stuff in the same window!
  7. Now save your new settings and click on OK and Apply in order to Exit.

Now, if you go to Start, you’ll see the Run box in the start menu!

NOTE: If you don’t like to add the Run box in the Start menu and if you don’t like to use the search box, you can always use the Windows Key logo + R shortcut to quickly open the Run box!

I use the Windows key + R to open it, except that it takes an average of 5 seconds to register that keypress and bring the dialog up. It is one of my biggest windows annoyances, but apparently not one I’ve been annoyed with enough to look up. Seems like my fast computers should be able to bring up that dialog instantly.

Hello, Bioteck.

I use the Windows Key + R to open the Run box, it works in Vista.

By the way, congrats for getting a pagerank of 3.

When I first got my Vista, I’m like where is my “run command”?! not long later I noticed the “start search” in the start menu and from that day on, I run most my program simply by typing the first few letters on there. So ya, I did not turn on the “run command” after that because the “start search” works the same way (and in my opinion, better). =)

I had the same feeling Wystery. To be honest: I like the search function too!
