VLC Media Player – A Great & Free Media Player

Posted By: BioTecK on Tuesday 30 December 2008 with 8 Comments

For a long time I was looking for a free DVD/Multimedia player, one which was able to play the most media types such as DivX, Avi, Wmv, MPEG-1 etc.
In the past I’ve been using PowerDVD but I didn’t like it anymore. It began to frustrate me cause it took some time before it could start, it uses a lot of RAM (I have 3GB RAM installed but even with 3GB installed it freezes from time to time!). So as you can see, it was time for another software. One which could do the same and one which was freeware.

After searching and trying a lot of multimedia players I think I’ve found the great software I was looking for: VLC Media Player.

VLC media player is multimedia player for various audio and video formats such as: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg.  Beside those VLC can also play DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. VLC can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network and it doesn’t need any external codec or program to work. A full feature list is available here.

So instead of paying for a DVD/Multimedia Player you really should try VLC!

PS: VLC can also be used on Mac OS X, Linux, BeOS and Syllable.

I first heard about VLC when I was doing some research on IPv6. It sounded very good, but I didn’t know anyone streaming using it on IPv6, so I didn’t try it.

Do you use IPv6? Do you stream media with VLC over IPv6? If so, I’d love to see how VLC works over IPv6.
