How To Use “Actions” In Photoshop!

Posted By: BioTecK on Friday 10 July 2009 with 16 Comments

Imagine the following situation: You have 500+ photos which you want to resize to a maximum height of 480px, save the picture in PSD format, save the picture for web, use the same image to resize it to 50px, canvas the image to 29px, save it again for web and close the picture without saving. Well, do you find your self repeating those steps again and again? Well, to be honest… I don’t!

As I’m working on the new webshop of JoicoEurope I needed to resize 500+ pictures twice, as mentioned above… One to get a larger picture which should have a maximum height of 480 px and the other one, 50×29 px, was meant to be used as a thumbnail.

So this is when the Action part in Photoshop comes in…. Actions can save you a lot of time and can increase productivity by automating repetitive tasks, yeah exactly like resizing images.   Action can also be used for reproducing techniques and creating special effects.  The only thing you have to do is “record” an action and “play” it the next time if you want to get the same results as the first time.

Want to know who you can record your own Actions in Photoshop, watch the video!

Ah, this is one of the reasons why I love Photoshop! I’ve had this experience before, had to resize like 2,000+ photos for a yearbook. That was very tedious, but with Actions, it made the task a whole lot easier! Excellent video tut on a very useful technique. Thanks so much!

By the way, I loved the tutorial.

I wasn’t even aware of these ‘actions. It is like recording a macro and then using it over and over again. Very handy, thanks for this.

I’d only use actions for the simple stuff. But it is a pretty cool feature.

It’s one of the last thing i learned in Photoshop. The actions option saved me lots of time. Also in combination with the batch and image processor. Just brilliant.
