LockHunter is a great alternative for “Unlocker”. LockHunter is a free tool which deletes files which are blocked by something you don’t know. This could be a system process or perhaps by another program.

Usually when you want to delete such file you get a pop up which says: “Cannot delete file: Access is denied” or something similar. In this cases you are left with 2 options:
1: Restart your computer and try to delete the file
2: Using LockHunter!

When using LockHunter you’re able to see the processes which has locked the file or folder. Beside that LockHunter (which is available in both 32 & 64 bits version!) allows you to unlock, delete, copy, rename a locked file or kill the locking process! All you have to do to unlock a file (or folder) is click with your right mouse click and there it is: LockHunter: What is locking my file and you’ll get a screen like here below:

Now you can choose to unlock the file or perhaps delete the file. If you’ve chosen for the last option; then the file will be deleted and put into your recycle bin.

The Windows Registry is a database which contains information about almost everything you do on your computer; From a visit to a website to information and settings of the hardware in your computer. The registry also contains information about drivers, other programs, user settings, etc.

So you can see that the often you use your computer, the more fuller the registry gets. I mean think about all the junk and temporary files stored on your computer, all those broken registry, which Windows forget to delete, etc. So that’s why your computer is getting slower and you notice a loss on your computer performance. However this doesn’t have to mean that you have to accept this, right? Luckily the registry can be cleaned up using a registry cleaner. One of them is: Auslogics Registry Cleaner.

Auslogics Registry Cleaner is a free software which will clean Windows registry for you. It will analyze it by searching for broken entries, non-existent file associations, uninstallation leftovers, and other elements that can turn the Registry into a real mess.

One of the good points of Auslogics Registry Cleaner is that it’s very easy to use for everyone, no matter your technical knowledge. When you run the program you get to choose between a quick scan and an advance one, where you get to choose which registry categories you want Auslogics to scan.

The results are displayed in a basic or detailed format. It will also show you your computers performance before the clean up and the percentage gained after the clean up, which is always good to know! Auslogics Registry Cleaner offers you a backup function too, just in case!

As mentioned above, this is just a great and simple software which is good for everyone. Make sure to use it once in a while in order to keep your registry nice & clean!

There are times when you want to edit, rename or delete system files and folders in Vista. For example; If you want to use a third party theme for your Windows Vista. In order to use a theme you need to edit and overwrite some system files and if you have ever tried this, then you must have noticed that windows doesn’t let you do this, even if you’re logged in as an administrator.

In order for you to edit and overwrite the system files (or rename and delete any other system files/folder) you must “Take Ownership” of the files. When taking ownership of a files, you’ve full control of the files (and folders) and you replace the security permissions to have access.

There are a lot of ways to bypass this in order for you to do what ever you want with the system files and folders, but there is a much easier way: Taking Ownership of files and folder with just 2 simple mouse clicks!

All you have to do is download Take Ownership.zip file, which is a registry hack, extract it using 7Zip (or any similar software) and install it by double clicking on the “InstallTakeOwnership.reg” file. This registry hack will give you a menu item called “Take Ownership” that will handle all the steps for you. I don’t know who originally made this script, but who ever he/she is; A big thanks, cause this makes life much easier!

NOTE: If you ever want to uninstall this great registry hack (I wouldn’t know why you would do that.. But ok, It’s your computer! ), just double click the “RemoveTakeOwnership.reg” file which is also packed in the zip file.

Well, make that almost a year ago. Anyway, I’ve used Foxmarks ever since and I really have to say: I can’t live without it! There are just too many times that I’m at work, searching for something which I already had bookmarked at home. In this kind of situation I just log in to my.foxmarks.com and can simply access my bookmarks. Briliant isn’t it?

Now just a couple of days ago I recieved an email from Foxmarks (like many other Foxmarks users) about a very important news about Foxmarks.

Foxmarks is becoming Xmarks. We’re not just changing our name, we’re also enhancing our browser add-on and web site with new capabilities.

With Xmark you’ll still enjoy bookmark sync and all other “previous” feature but there are some new cool features like;

Smarter Search
From now on Xmarks will highlight the 3 sites in your Google results that have been bookmarked by the most people; this is a quick and easy way to tell which sites are most valued by real people like you.

Site Info
Xmarks adds a small blue information icon in your browser location bar. Click it to learn more about the site you are on and see recommendations for the top 5 similar sites. This is a great way to uncover the best of the web.

Xmarks.com
Visit Xmarks.com from any browser to write your own site reviews and to see even more similar site recommendations.

To learn more about Xmarks click here. So if you liked Foxmarks, you’ll love Xmarks too!

Ow I almost forgot: In order to manage/edit your bookmarks from any computer, you’ll have to log in via login.xmarks.com.

Let’s start with a little basic stuff, shall we? FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a very common method to transfer (large) files from “computer A” to “Computer B” or vice versa. Transferring files from a client computer to a server computer is called uploading and transferring from a server to a client is downloading.

In order to transfer files using FTP, you need:

The FTP Server address; This could look like “ftp.domainname.com” or it could look like “11.231.231.234″.

Username and password. Some FTP servers let you connect to them anonymously so you don’t need a username and password.

An FTP Client.

Now, there are a lot of FTP Clients, some of them you have to pay for and some of them are freeware. One of the free FTP clients is FileZilla.
FileZilla is powerful Open Source, so it’s free, FTP/SFTP client with many features. FileZilla is a fast and reliable FTP client with a lot of useful features, such as:

Resume support for downloads and uploads.

Site manager to store all your connection details and logins.

Available in many languages.

Configurable transfer speed limits.

Cross-platform. Runs on Windows, Linux, *BSD, Mac OS X and more.

Supports FTP, FTP over SSL/TLS (FTPS) and SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP).

Firewall support and many more.

Installing FileZilla is very easy and using is even more easier! FileZilla is a great FTP Client with a clean design and I suggest tring it. I use FileZilla at work and at home and I’m really happy with this free FTP Client.
So if you’re looking for a FTP Client with a lot of great features which comes in for free, then you really have to try FileZilla!

Now imagine this.. 24 250 GB SSD’s (total capacity: 6TB) chained together in one RAID device, making it a fast computer! A very fast system that actually reaches transfer speeds of 2GBps, which is capable of loading all Microsoft Office applications in half a second, ripping a full 700MB CD in 0.8 seconds, open 53 programs from the test computer’s start menu in 18 seconds and do a complete system defrag in 3 seconds.
Don’t believe me? Just watch the video here below!

I know I haven’t posted anything for a couple of weeks now, but believe me when I say that I was extremely busy with life, designing some cool stuff (which I’ll post about when it’s finished!), arranging stuff for our marriage (we have found the right place to celebrate our wedding, but will tell you about that later! ) etc. So there will be plenty updates from now on!

But let me start with this good news:
As you might know I’m working at Joico for a couple of months now and as my contract period is almost over, Joico has decided to offer me a new contract!
With this new contract some things will change (good changes)! A lot of things will remain the same; for example I’m still in charge of the database/ftp server & website, I still have to do some photography, registration procedure and a lot more!

However like I mentioned, I’m going to get some additional duties. Stuff I really love to do and which is in my field of interest! From now on I’ll also help people with computer problems and will do more computer stuff then before! Beside maintaing the website I’ll also have to maintain the webshop, including testing the application etc. Beside those there are some other small changes, which I love doing.

Believe it or not, I’m really happy about this.. Not only about my new duties but off course about my new contract and especially in this hard time when a lot of people are unemployed, companies shutting down etc.
Woehoe.. It’s time to celebrate!

In the past couple of years I’ve helped a lot of people with there computer problems. A lot of people wondered why their computer was running slower than usual and why they notice a loss on their computer performance. Well, unfortunately the more often you use your computer the slower it gets IF you don’t do anything about it.

I mean think about ALL the junk and temporary files stored on your computer, all those broken registry keys / unused files when you un-installing an application etc. So it’s no wonder that your computer is getting slower and you notice a loss on your computer performance, right? So what can you do about this? The answer to the problem is very simple: Use Auslogics BootSpeed 4!

Auslogics BootSpeed 4 is an all in one utility which really can speed up your computer. With this tool you have everything you need to speed up and improve performance of your computer. You even can tweak Windows if you like too!

When opening Auslogics BootSpeed4 you’ll see a very clean design and you’ll see that it’s very easy to navigate through the options, which brings me back to the all in one part I mentioned before. Here below is a list which Auslogics BootSpeed offers:

Computer Clean Up: With this option you can clean up your computer by cleaning your disk, registry, getting rid of unnecessary software and optimize the boot time of your computer by controlling which programs are allowed to start automatically on your computer!

Disk Cleaner: Clean up disk drives and get rid of junk files. See below for a screenshot of junk files which Ausoligcs BootSpeed 4 found on my computer! 4416 junk files which had a total size of 2,11 GB!

Auslogics Registry Cleaner: Clean up the Windows Registry and fix registry errors.

Auslogics Uninstall Manager: Add and remove programs and Widnows Updates.

Auslogics Startup Manager: Control which programs are allowed to start automatically on your computer. If you want to make sure that your computer startups faster I really recommend to check this out.

Optimization: With this option you can improve your computer performance by defragmenting your hard disks, your registry and even your RAM memory. Beside that you can speed up your internet browser.

Auslogics Disk Defrag: Boost performance by defragmenting disk drives. See below for a screenshot. I had defraged my disk a couple of days ago, but still Auslogics BootSpeed did a good job!

Auslogics Registry Defrag: Compact and defragment the registry to speed up your system.

Auslogics Internet Optimizer: Speed up your web browser and Internet downloads.

Auslogics Memory Optimizer: Free up and defrag computer memory (RAM). This might be handy when you need more RAM for editing a movie or working with a large Photoshop file.

Privacy and Security: Protect your computer from Internet Attacks.

Auslogics Track Eraser: Protect your privacy by removing tracks from your computer.

Auslogics PC Security: Prevent Internet attacks on your computer.

Auslogics File Shredder: Remove files and folders beyond restoration. Note: By doing this you wouldn’t be able to recover any files/folder with a recovery software anymore!

Auslogics Disk Wiper: Wipe your disk completely and make sure files you have removed earlier cannot be undeleted.

Information and Control: Get detailed information about your system and tweak them if you would like to. However, this is an option for advanced users.

Auslogics Tweak Manager: Use many undocumented Windows tweaks to tune up your system for maximum performance. For examle you can tweak Animation and Effects in Windows, the user interface, startup and shut down and more!

Auslogics Service Manager: Here you can find Windows system services settings which you can tweak or shutdown if you would like to,

Auslogics System Information: Here you can get detailed information about your computer (hardware) and the operating system.

Auslogics Task Manager: Get detailed information about which programs and processes are running on your computer. This is a bit different then the build-in task manager. For example: If you see a process and don’t know what it is, you can click on “Google it” and Auslogics BootSpeed will connect you to Google so you can find out what the process is about.

Windows Tools: Here you’ll find some hidden Windows Tools which can be very useful when you want to optimize your computer and you even can decide which services should be running on your system.

Give it a try, I know you’ll like it!

Ever since I installed Windows Vista on my pc I noticed that there are times that my second HDD (Hard Disk Drive) doesn’t react that well. This only happened when I didn’t use my second HDD for a while. So when I wanted to access a file which was located in my second HDD it took some time before the HDD start re-initialize/spin-up.

At first I though that there was something in the BIOS but I was wrong! It was Windows Vista’s fault! In Windows Vista there are three preset built-in default power plans;

High Performance: Which maximizes system performance and responsiveness

Power Saver: which saves power by reducing system performance

Balanced: which achieve a balance between the two by offering full performance during active use and saves power when computer is idle or inactivity state

Yep.. The cause of my problem! For some reason Microsoft seemed to think that I was using Vista on a laptop and accordingly, set the Power Options to match. So that’s why my HDD was shutdown and cut off from power in order to conserve and save power/electricity. So whenever I wanted to access my HDD it start making loud noises (generated from sudden start moving of HDD’s mechanical part) and it took some time before I could access the HDD.

So if you don’t want your HDD turned off to sleep by Windows Vista, you can disable the power saving feature on hard disks, by following the steps below:

Press Windows key + R

Type powercfg.cpl ,1

In the window which will appear, scroll down and find: Harddisk

Click on the + sign and you’ll see Turn off hard disk after

Now my recommandation is to simply type Never in the box or type 0 (zero)

Now click on Apply and OK to exit and you’re done

From now on your HDD isn’t going to be turned off by Windows Vista, so no loud noises and delay’s anymore!

The index service scans through files and folders on your system, whether you’re using XP or Vista, and records information about them in index files in order to speed out the searching speed. In Windows Vista the indexing options runs automatically in the background to index all the files in the Start Menu, user profile folders and files setup by default. Like any PC user you probably have a lot of file in these locations and if you’re using your computer and the files in those location the indexing service may slow your pc’s performance, and that’s not what we want, do we?

Like I mentioned in a post called “Disabling Indexing Service In Windows XP” which I posted some months ago, I don’t use the search function and I don’t want to loose any performance because of function which I don’t use. So what you need to do is disable the indexing service. By disabling the index service you can gain more CPU & RAM Resources and improve the performance of your computer, but it will slows you down when searching for files.

You can disable indexing service in Vista in three methods.

Method 1: Disabling the index service through the Turn Windows features on or off screen

Go to Start -> Control Panel

Choose Uninstall a Program

In the next window search for Turn Windows features on or off at the right side of the window and search for Indexing Service. See the screenshot here below.

Uncheck the box for Indexing Service and click ok.

Method 2: Disabling the index service on a particular hard disk drive

Open My Computer

Right click on the hard drive to disable indexing (i.e (C:) drive letter).

Select Properties on the contextual menu.

Click on General tab if it’s not already selected.

Uncheck the check box for Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching option.

Click OK, and wait for the index removal process to complete, which may take a few minutes.

Method 3: Disabling the index service for ALL hard disks at once

This is the fastest, and my favorite, way to disable the indexing service

Go to Start and run Service in the Start Search bar

Search for Windows Search Service and select Properties

In the screen choose Disabled for the start type.

Now you have to stop this service by clicking on Stop

Note: Searching is still possible after disabling of indexing service but it will be more slowly.

UAC, better known as User Access Control is a new feature of Windows Vista. UAC is meant to improve the security of your system. Each time an application is installed or whenever an important system change is made by the user or by a running process, the screen is blacked out and temporarily disabled and a dialog is shown with the choices to allow or deny the action, as shown as below.

If you aren’t logged as an administrator, Windows Vista will also ask for the administrator password. Like mentioned before this is to improve the security of your system, however if you are an experienced power user it is quite likely that you find UAC extremely annoying, just like me!

Before I go on; Disabling UAC is not recommended by Microsoft because it can make your system unstable, however in my case I haven’t experienced anything weird and my system is very stable!

There are many ways to disable UAC, but I prefer this method. Even after rebooting your system, there is no way that UAC will ever start again.

Press Windows Key + R in order to load the run box.

Type “msconfig” in the run box, or in the search box in Vista Start menu, to load MS config and click OK.

Once MSConfig is loaded, click on the Tools menu.

Select Disable UAC in the menu then click OK.

By doing this, you’ll disable UAC. If you wish to re-enable UAC, follow the steps above but click Enable UAC instead.

You can also enable or disable UAC from the Control Panel if you want to.

Type UAC in the search box, Click on the first result which will be: “User Accounts – Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off.”

The UAC window will open. Deselect the option Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer and press the OK button, as shows as below, and your done!

Which method you prefer to use, Windows Vista needs to be restarted. After the restart, UAC will be disabled and you’ll be done with those annoying prompts!

Some time ago I wrote a post about how you could use DOS to check if a website is online or not. If you haven’t read the post yet, you still can read it here here…

Anyway, Charles left me a comment saying: “That’s cool but I can’t access dos at work.. any other idea’s?”. Well.. I have an idea!

In stead of using DOS to check if a website is down, you can also surf to: DownForEveryoneOrJustMe and find it out your self!

You simply enter in the desired url and DownForEveryoneOrJustMe will let you know if it’s a problem with your computer or a general problem with the website. The respond is quite clear, as you can see below, it will tell you whether or not the website is down for everyone or just for you!

Based on my tests I would say that the tool is pretty accurate, I have checked several websites and it did report the real situation every time.

This tool could help you not to freak out, so bookmark it and use it the next time you see a website down, just paste the URL there to see what is going on!

If you’re using Windows Vista then you have probably noticed the quick power button on the start menu is used to put the computer into Sleep Mode by default. So by clicking it your computer doesn’t really turn off but it goes into Sleep Mode.

Sleep Mode is like pausing a dvd player: The computer immediately stop what it’s doing and is ready to start again when you want to resume working. So the computer saves all open documents and programs and allows the computer to quickly resume full-power operation within seconds.

This is something which I really don’t like to use, I rather have quick access to the shutdown button instead. I mean if I want to shutdown my computer I really want to shut it down and not putting the computer into sleep mode!

Anyway, There’s a way to change the button’s assignment and really shutdown your computer;

Press Windows Logo KEY + R on your keyboard.
(Note: You can also navigate to Start – Control Panel – Power Options – Click in the left side of the window on Choose what the power button does. Here you can change the button’s assignment too!)

run powercfg.cpl ,1

In the screen which just loaded, open the Power Button and Lid > Start Menu Power Button.

Here you can select the action when you click on the start menu power button; In this case: Choose shutdown. As shown as below.

Click Ok and you’re done!

Now if you look at your shutdown button, you’ll see that the button is slightly different then it used to be. Like you can see below:

So next time you want to shutdown your computer, the computer will just do the right thing: Shutting down!

There are times when you want to visit a website just to notice that the website is down, or doesn’t even load. If this concerns your own website then you are probably panicking! You start asking your self: Is it just me or is my website really down?!

I have been in this situation myself a lot of times, but there’s something you can do before starting to panic; Ping the website to see if it’s REALLY down. In a lot of cases there’s nothing wrong with your website and the problem is just your computer!

You can use the PING function in DOS to determine whether a specific IP address/website is accessible. How it works?? It works by sending a packet to the specified address and waiting for a reply.

You can ping a website by following the steps below;

Go to Start – Run

Type cmd

In the DOS screen type “ping” followed by the domain name which you want to check and hit Enter.
For example: ping www.BioTecK.net.

Now the website will be pinged. In the most cases you’ll see the next message, as shown as in the screen shot below, in your DOS screen.

So if the website doesn’t reply then the website is probably down!
If pinging works just fine and you still can’t access your website get those, the best things you can do, is to reboot your computer and verify the website again. In almost every case I could access the website after a reboot!

As you probably have read, I have upgraded my computer to Vista Home Premium and so far so good. Vista has a lot of new features, some of them are very handy and some of them need to be shutdown. While I was checking and playing with the explorer setting I found a very cool feature which is unfortunately disabled by default and which needs to be enabled in my opinion.

In the “past” if you wanted to select multiple files in Windows you had to hold down the “ctrl” key in order to select file by file but what if this can be done with only one hand?? I mean, whenever you’re using the ctrl key to select multiple files you need one hand to hold the ctrl key and you need the other hand to hold the mouse, right?

The new explorer has check boxes next to the file to enable multiple selections. However this feature is disabled by default and needs to be enabled manually. To enable this option, follow the steps below:

Select Organize

Select Folder and Search options

You’ll get a screen, go to View and enable the Use check boxes to select items by checking the box.

Press Apply and OK to exit the screen.

You’re done! You can now select multiple files just by checking the boxes near the files as shows as below! It’s much easier than to hold the ctrl key.

There are times when you want to convert a file without the need to download and install a software. For example if you are at work where you can’t install a software because you don’t have administrator rights.

Some days ago I received a word document with the .docx extension and I knew that I couldn’t open it on the computer which I was working on, because it didn’t had Office 2007 installed and I couldn’t install the Office Compatibility Pack. As I needed that document I start looking for a solution on Google and I found the solution for my problem: Zamzar.

Zamzar.com is a free file conversion where you can convert your file for free! Zamzar supports conversion between a wide variety of different file formats which can be found here.

Like I mentioned, Zamzar is free to use but it has it’s own limitation; You don’t have priority file conversion, converting files with maximum size of 100 mb, up to 5 conversion at the time and you don’t have any online storage. There are some other limitation but that’s not very important, in my opinion, such as: not having a secure conversion (128 bit SSL), not being able to manage your files with a personal inbox and renaming & deleting your files. So if you’re good with those and you just want to have your file converted then you should give it a try.

It works really easy:

Select files or URL to convert

Choose the format to convert to

Enter your email address to receive converted files

Convert

Check your inbox for your converted file and that’s it!

Windows Vista has a lot of new security feature. After installing Windows Vista on my computer one of the first things I did was turning some of these new features off. One of these new features is Windows Defender. Windows Defender, better known as Microsoft AntiSpyware, is a software product from Microsoft to prevent, remove and quarantine spyware in Windows. Windows Defender is included and enabled by default in Windows Vista.

Personally I don’t like it and I think this spyware detection is nothing but crap. Luckily you can disable this function because you don’t need it or if you prefer to use other applications to secure your system.

If you follow this steps you’ll disable Windows Defender for good! Even after rebooting your system, there is no way that Windows Defender will ever start!

Go to Start > RUN

Type msconfig and hit Enter

A new window will appear. Go to “Startup” tab and deselect the Windows Defender box and Apply the new settings.

Click OK to close the screen. There’s no need for reboot now, so continue without rebooting.

Now, go to Start > Run

Type services.msc, scroll down and right click on Windows Defender and Stop the service.

Right Click again and choose Properties.

In the screen look for Startup Type and choose Disabled and click on Apply.

Click on OK to exit and that’s it. You have disabled Windows Defender from ever running again!

Easy right?!

Like I wrote a couple of days ago I wanted to try Vista. In that post I told you that I had some concerns about installing Vista on my system which was running pretty smooth and fast on Windows XP.

After giving it some thoughts and reading the comments in that post I decided to give it a try. I mean the only way for me to see if Vista is that bad or that good it’s just by trying it out, right? So I start backing up my stuff, such as My Documents, my pictures etc.

Anyway, I start installing it. The installation was very easy and nothing like installing Windows XP. I mean I was used to the blue dos screens, but Vista was nothing like that. The installation went pretty smooth and I didn’t experienced any strange things.

When Vista was finally installed I didn’t experience any problem with installing drivers. Every driver was just available in Vista so no worries any more! In the mean time I liked what I saw on my screen; a smooth looking theme which felt and worked smooth. Again nothing like Windows XP.

So I started to install some of my favorite applications such as Winamp 2.78 & Startbar. Those are some very old application which I really wasn’t sure if they were going to work on Vista. Installing Winamp 2.78 was as usual as always and it didn’t gave me any troubles. I was happy that I could listen to music while installing other applications.

Now I wanted to install Statbar. Statbar is a system status bar which provides a handy, orderly overview of your system’s condition with 19 information modules like Winamp Control, quick launch, CPU usage and more. When installing Statbar the application gave me errors about 3 files which were newer then the one in the installer, but I could continue installing it. When I ran this application I noticed that only one of the 19 modules didn’t work. I think that’s because I have 3GB RAM and Statbar sees only 2GB! No big deal for me, I mean I was very happy that I still can use my favorite application again!

In the mean time I tried to install my Canon MP110 printer and again no problems. Usually this all in one printer is installed on my pc and it’s being shared so everyone in the network can use it. At first I though that I could shared it again and make sure that Jannie can use it from her computer but that wasn’t going to happen right away! It gave me a hard time but when I finally turned off the firewall, Windows Defender and some more stuff I was able to ping my computer from Jannie’s computer. In the mean time I had installed the printer on Jannie’s computer and shared it, cause at that point I could access her computer but not the way around!

Everything seems to be working without any problems. Only one applications wasn’t compatible; ActiveSync for my HTC P4350. Luckily Microsoft has Windows Mobile Device Center which seems to helped my problem. Now I can synchronize the data on my phone with Outlook.

So far so good. I like the Windows Aero & Flip 3D. It hasn’t crashed (yet), it feels stable, smooth and I really like the visuals! The thing which I didn’t like was the Windows Sidebar so I’ve turn it off and that’s because I use Statbar! So I’m not going to compalin now. I mean the first impressions are just great and everything seems to be working so I’m happy! So I guess that from now on you’ll see more Windows Vista tips and tricks on BioTecK.net!
